A Parent's Guide to Helping Your Child Prepare Using Past Papers

Why Past Papers Reduce Exam Anxiety

One of the biggest sources of exam anxiety for Matric and FSc students is the unknown — not knowing what to expect in the exam hall. Past papers solve this problem directly. A student who has seen and practised real exam papers feels far more confident than one who has only studied textbooks.

As a parent, one of the most effective things you can do is make past papers a normal part of your child's study routine — as normal as doing homework.

How to Set Up a Low-Pressure Practice Routine at Home

  1. Create a dedicated study space: A quiet, clean desk away from TV and family activity. It doesn't need to be elaborate — just consistent.
  2. Download the papers together: Sit with your child and help them download past papers from PaperHouse. Show them how to find papers by subject and year. This removes a minor but real friction point.
  3. Set a timer together: When your child sits for a timed practice paper, set the timer as a shared activity. This normalises the time pressure without making it confrontational.
  4. Don't hover: Once the paper starts, let them work independently. The temptation to help mid-paper is counterproductive — the real exam will offer no such help.
  5. Celebrate effort, not just marks: When they finish a paper, ask "What did you learn from this?" not "What mark did you get?" Growth in understanding is the goal, not a score on a practice paper.

Signs Your Child Needs Extra Support

  • Avoidance: consistently finding reasons not to sit for practice papers
  • Blank papers: sitting for the full time but writing very little
  • Tearfulness or frustration after every practice session
  • Claiming to "understand everything" but performing poorly in practice

If you notice these signs consistently, consider supplementary tuition for specific weak subjects rather than generic study pressure. Often one or two targeted sessions with a good tutor on a difficult topic unlocks a child's entire confidence in that subject.

Exams are stressful, but preparation reduces that stress. Your calm, consistent support as a parent is one of the most powerful advantages your child can have. Good luck to you both. 🎓
